Susan was the winner of a recent national art competition called “The Art of a Good Death”. Her Grief Matters cartoon, “I’m OK’ won in the category, “Effectiveness in Communicating Research”. (Link to cartoon here.)
Susan is working on her second book, Tell Me Where It Hurts: A Graphic Narrative on Healthcare and Compassion, with Nimbus Publishing and Vagrant Press, due for publication in the spring of 2028.
Her first book, Dying for Attention: A Graphic Memoir of Nursing Home Care, was published with Conundrum Press, 2021. It sold out after two print runs but is still available in many libraries and online used bookstores.
Cartooning and Illustrations
Susan is one of two monthly cartoonists for Grief Matters, a non-profit research group working to increase awareness of grief, “so that we can all better support ourselves, others and our communities.”
She spent the fall of 2025 at La Maison de Beaumont, art residency, France, and the previous fall at the Can Serrat International art residency, Spain, working on healthcare and compassion visual stories. She was invited to the first-ever Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity’s Graphic Novel and Visual Narratives residency in 2022. These residencies are juried.
Susan has studied at the Center for Cartoon Studies, Vermont, and completed the year-long intensive online comics course with the Sequential Artists’ Workshop, Florida. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from NSCAD University and a Master of Fine Arts, Creative Nonfiction, from the University of King’s College.
